IPA Best of Show: A Showcase of Excellence

Forty-five outstanding photographs from the prestigious International Photography Award (IPA) Exhibits are ongoing until April 7 at the Photography Gallery of the School of Design and Arts (SDA) Campus of the De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde. The IPA Best of Show is a collaboration of IPA and De La Salle College of St. Benilde, supervised by the dean, Gerry Torres and IPA Philippines Chairman Ruston Banal. This is a curated exhibition usually being launched in Splashlight Studio in New York as one of the highlights of IPA’s Lucie Awards—an event that honors the achievement of the best in the field throughout the world. The 45 images are chosen among 30,000 images IPA receives every year. In her statement, Patricia Lanza, art consultant and curator, shares: “The power of the artist lies in the vision. It is this way of looking at the world,with emotion, that makes the world rises and stand out. This came into play in the making of the curatorial selections for ‘Best of Show.’ The winning entries span a variety of diverse genres, as do the choices. I come from a background of documentary photography and am drawn to photographs that tell a story—have something to say. The story can be realized in many photography forms; fine art, fashion, advertising, documentary, portraiture. That is the source of inspirationI look for when reviewing the selections. I look for a great narrative, technical execution, and above all, originality.” As a permanent partner for the past three years, CSB-SDA with its AB Photography Program has sponsored major IPA events such as the hosting of top Hollywood Photographer Indrani, former resident photographer of the now deceased David Bowie that conducted a special workshop for students. IPA has been conducting an annual competition for professional, amateur, and student photographers on a global scale, creating one of the most ambitious and comprehensive competitions in the photography world today.Each year, the IPA invites a guest curator to select 40-50 images from both the professional and non-professional pools of first, second, and third place winners to be exhibited in an exclusive Best of Show exhibition that opens in New York during the week leading up to the Lucie Awards Gala. The exhibition then travels to various countries to be included in photo festivals, galleries, and other photography-related events throughout the following year. IPA is a sister-effort of the Lucie Foundation, a charitable foundation whose mission is to honor master photographers, discover and cultivate emerging talent, and promote the appreciation of photography worldwide. The annual programming of Lucie Foundation is funded largely through the International Photography Awards, including the signature event, the Lucie Awards.
