BAGUIO CITY— Five individual women who were chosen for their dedication on their prestigious services to the community were awarded for Outstanding Women Leaders (OWL) of Baguio 2018 during the Kababaihan Festival in celebration of National Women’s Month with the theme “We Make Change Work for Women’.

OWL president Imelda Bisnar said: “We salute you women that you push yourselves beyond your comfort zones that you go out to boost the self-esteem and actively manifest your inner power in others and today we are truly proud to present you in our city, in our country and to the world.”
Among the awardees was Dr. Phillian Louise Weygan-Allan for spiritual and sociocultural leadership, who is the voice of the Indigenous Peoples.
Flora Dolor Balaba, for highlighting the rights of senior citizens. She authored resolution 54-2008 when she served as senior citizen councilor of the day wherein the city designated the blue pedestrian lanes for senior citizens, PWDs and pregnant women.
Elizabeth Nattong Mamanglo was awarded for the uplift of women and family through cooperativism. She co-founded the Mothers and Family Multipurpose Cooperative (MOFAMCO).
Jocelyn Ladizabal Mariano was awarded for cooperativism. She initiated the increase in salaries and benefits of employees and officers. As manager of the Baguio-based Printing and Publishing multipurpose cooperative, she had encouraged women to take on printing and publishing jobs which originally was dominated by men.
Sonia Gonzales Mina was awarded for organizational management. She pushed for the construction of adequate waiting areas for senior citizens, PWDs and pregnant women in pharmacies operating in Baguio.
“Today is the day to recognize the achievement of women and the role they are playing in the development especially in politics and economic arenas. It is important to sustain it and ask what more can be contributed in empowering women,” said Mayor Mauricio Domogan in his message.
Retired judge Delilah Muñoz, who is the guest speaker, said “the roles women do in the society are achievable and possible because of the overwhelming support of the government, their families, society and the men in their lives.”
