Last February 11, Belle De Jour Power Planner (BDJ) held its annual Beauty Confidential, a one-day beauty boot camp that brings together a unique mix of shopping, workshops, and entertainment. Held at the Glorietta Activity Center, over 20 beauty and wellness brands participated, while around 500 people attended the biggest beauty event of the year.
Now on its third beauty boot camp, BDJ partnered with one of the top beauty resources in the country, Project Vanity, and organized a series of workshops by experts and enthusiasts to help women bring out their most beautiful, and their sense of confidence to make their dreams a reality.
Recent studies showed that only seven percent of Filipinas can confidently say they are beautiful. The studies revelaed that this bleak number is a result of numerous advertising that shaped how beauty is seen by Filipinas—scenes of women having unnaturally fair skin, ultra-fixed shiny, straight hair, and slim frames. On the flip side, the studies also showed that nine out of 10 Filipinas believe in the value of self-care, which is why the expo focused a lot of its workshops on how women can take care of their skin and how having beautiful skin can boost one’s confidence.
BDJ founder Darlyn Ty-Nilo expressed, “Taking care of yourself first allows you to be more and do more. As cheesy as it may sound, when you feel good about yourself, you really feel like you can conquer the world—one goal at a time.” Liz Lanuzo of Project Vanity added, “No one else can take better care of you but yourself.”
Makeup artist Kristel Yap shared techniques on how to achieve a romantic look at the BYS booth
One of the workshops was led by Carefree feminine products and Lay Bare Waxing Salon, two of the most trusted brands by Filipinas today that champion intimate grooming. For the first time, the two teamed up to encouraged participants to open up and get real about their feminine hygiene needs. They discussed different care tips for women’s private area, and how feeling clean and fresh can give them that extra boost of confidence. It was also during this time that Carefree introduced its newest Intimate Beauty Ambassador, television host Gretchen Ho, who proudly revealed how her own intimate beauty secrets improved her confidence as she navigated her transformative 20s as a volleyball star, a celebrity host, and a woman. “I am a firm believer that taking good care of one’s hygiene and intimate beauty leads to real inner confidence,” said Gretchen. She says that staying fresh and clean is an important part of feeling good, inside and out. “What you feel down there is what you project to people. If there’s one thing I’ve got be sensitive about, it’s my hygiene, especially down there,” she admitted.
Other workshops included derma secrets for great skin by Bioderma’s expert Dr. Gaile Robredo-Vitas; makeup hacks from Martin Orosa of Ever Bilena, Theresa Carbonel of Ellana Minerals, and Colleen De Guzman of Max Factor, Nuxe, and Covergirl; and healing oils by Zenutrients founder and owner Angela Dinglasan.
"Skin care is all about hiyangan. What may work for me may not work for you," said Ever Bilena's Martin Orosa
Apart from workshops held on the main stage, participating brands also had some fun and games, as well as mini-workshops for all the attendants. BYS and Revlon had makeup tutorials, Chihuahua Cosmetics, CosRX, K-Palette, and Makeup World hosted games in their booths for freebies, while Celeteque gave free skin analysis and consultations. Amazing shopping deals were also available to the fair visitors at the booths of Canmake, Colourette, The Body Shop, and Pink Sugar. No participant went empty-handed from Beauty Confidential!
