Concert Review: 'Ai' night of love and laughter

CONCERT REVIEW: Valentine’s Day is not just about love but a time for hearty laughs too. The last time Pinoys saw the comedy actress on stage bringing on the laughs was ages ago (headlining a concert with Asia’s Nightingale Lani Misalucha). Judging by the concertgoers’ warm reception that night last week, she was definitely missed. Ai Ai opened the concert with the enchanting song “Shape Of You.” Though not the best singer out there, she knew how to give people a good time through her inimitable ways that has earned for her the title Comedy Concert Queen. In the audience then were expats, couples and even singles, all of whom enjoyed Ai Ai’s show. As expected, the comedienne unleashed her sexy alter ego, donning skimpy tangas in several spots. Seemingly eager to also please the younger set in the crowd, Ai Ai also performed current chart-toppers. “Valentine’s is throughout the year because Valentine’s is a celebration of love,” she said at one point. She belted “Saving All My Love For You,” trying her utmost to ape the earth-shaking manner by which the late singer Whitney Houston delivered it. Did she do justice to it? It’s an A for effort at the very least. Ai Ai also sang Aegis’ “Basang Basa Sa Ulan” using, but of course, umbrella as props. Photos of her iconic roles (from being Ina Montecillo of “Ang Tanging Ina” to Hillary of “Area”) were flashed on an LCD screen behind her during the number. Why, her collaboration with Filipino R&B group Ex Battalion on “Hayaan Mo Sila” and “Walang Pinipili” was spot-on! She also did well swaying sexy to the tune of Camila Cabello’s “Havana.” Near midnight, Ai Ai introduced her special guest: Piolo Pascual. The audience went crazy. It was kilig overload throughout the venue as he sang a ballad rendition of Wency Cornejo’s “Hanggang,” followed by a heartfelt interpretation of Adele’s “All I Ask.” “Kung wala sila (supporters), wala din tayo. Wala tayong show,” the hunky actor said as he and Ai Ai capped the night with Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect,” followed by her solo take on Calvin Harris’s “This Is What You Came From” feat. Rihanna.
