Filipino basketball player Mark "Macmac" Cardona was embroiled in yet another controversy after allegedly pawning a P300,000 stolen sport utility vehicle which has been alerted to the Philippine National Police's Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG).

Senior Inspector Carol Jabagat, newly installed PNP-HPG spokesperson, said in an interview with the Manila Bulletin that a case for estafa was already filed on February 2 before the Pasay City Prosecutor's Office against Cardona, whose full name is Mark Reynan Mikessel Cardona.
According to Jabagat, Cardona pawned a Subaru Forester with plate number NIR-780 to the victim, Michelle Bautista Flores, 32, of Orambo Drive, Pasig City on November 13, 2017.
Jabagat said Cardona and Flores met at the Remington Hotel in New Port Boulevard, Pasay City where Cardona placed the car as a collateral for a loan worth P300,000 payable with a 20-percent interest. Cardona claimed that he badly needed the money to pay for his debt.
Cardona told Flores that he would redeem the car on November 30 and gave her a copy of the official receipt of their transaction, a copy of the certificate of registration of the vehicle, and the keys.
However, when the payment became due, Cardona failed to pay Flores so she followed up on his payment with a phone call.
Cardona said he still had no money so he advised the victim to use the SUV instead. However, when Flores asked for the original copy of the registration papers, Cardona failed to produce it.
This prompted Flores to verify the status of the vehicle to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Pasig City where she learned that it was included in the list of wanted or stolen cars under the PNP-HPG.
According to Jabagat, the SUV pawned by Cardona was reported stolen by a certain Jarwin Daid Lim Uy on September 14, 2017. Uy reportedly sold the vehicle to a car dealer who failed to pay him.
Flores then sought help in a television show to run after the former cager.
"We are awaiting for the warrant of arrest to be released by the City Prosecutor's Office and that will be the only time we could conduct a manhunt for him," Jabagat said.
Jabagat said Flores already surrendered the vehicle to the PNP-HPG last week.
Cardona has played for a number of teams in the Philippine Basketball Association including the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters, Meralco Bolts, Air 21 Express, NLEX Road Warriors, and his last known stint in Global Port Batang Pier in 2017.
In August 2016, Cardona made headlines -- not because of the sport -- but because he was rushed to the hospital due to a reported drug overdose in an apparent suicide attempt.
