Van hits, kills elderly woman
A 72-year old woman died on the spot after being struck by a speeding van while she was crossing C-5 in Taguig City at 4:05 a.m the other day.
The victim was identified as Eufemia Bontuyan, a resident of Barangay. Pinagsama, Taguig City. The driver was identified as Jay Lomoljo, 42, a resident of Imus, Cavite.
Police said that the van driven by Lomoljo was traveling along C-5 Road from the East Service Road heading to Makati. Police added that the driver failed to notice the victim upon reaching Barangay Pinagsama in Taguig.
The victim's remains were brought to at Quiogue Funeral Homes in Pasig City. the driver of the vehicle was detained by the Taguig City police station. (Dhel Nazario)
Father, son perish in fire
A father and his son perished in a fire when they were trapped inside their burning home Thursday morning at Barangay Nuevo, Makati City.
The two were identified as Arnel Lambino, 50 and Aries Lambino, 23. Makati Cty Fire Marshal Supt. Roy Quisto, said the victims were trapped in their rented house by the iron grills installed on the house’s windows.
Quisto added that the fire started at 11:48 p.m on the second floor of the house owned by a certain Reggie Basco located at Labanda corner San Jose Streets where the Lambinos were staying. The fire quickly spread and partially damaged four other houses that were made of light materials.
Quisto said that neighbors of the victim reported that they had no electricity in their homes and that the fire might have started from an improvised light provided by a candle or an oil lamp.
The body of Arnel was found on the second floor of the home while his son was found at the ground floor.
The damage to property was pegged at P100,000. Quisto reminded everyone to make sure that their homes have access points in case they to need to get out during emergencies. (Dhel Nazario)
Five held for gambling
Five people, including two teenagers and a junk collector, were arrested for illegal gambling Thursday in separate incidents in Manila.
PO2 Michael Permano identified the suspects as 27-year-old helper Rico Ebuseo of 417 Juan D. Moriones, Binondo, Manila, and 26-year-old junk collector Patrick Figura of 422 Claro M. Recto Avenue, Binondo, Manila.
Arresting officers PO1 Bryan Perez and PO1 Francis De Mesa were conducting Oplan Galugad at 9 a.m. on February 7, 2018 along Claro M. Recto Avenue, Tondo, Manila, when they chanced upon Figura and Ebuseo engaging in an illegal form of gambling called “Cara y Cruz”.
The officers approached the suspects and arrested them for Violation of Presidential Decree No. 1602 or Illegal Gambling.
Seized from the suspects were bills and coins of various denominations amounting to P363.
Meanwhile, three others were arrested for the same violation on Thursday in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
Police authorities identified the suspects as 25-year-old sales clerk John Caragdag, 19-year-old Ariel Banastao, Jr. and 18-year-old Reynaldo Fernando, Jr., all from the same address of No. 4856 San Antonio St., Sta. Mesa, Manila.
Initial investigation revealed that elements of Station Drug Enforcement Team (SDET) were conducting an Anti-Criminality Campaign on February 7 at around 11:35 p.m. along Damka St. Sta. Mesa, Manila when officers saw the suspects engaging in a game of Cara y Cruz.
The arresting officers confronted and subsequently arrested the suspects and recovered bills and coins amounting to P93.
The suspects were placed under police custody and will face appropriate charges for the Violation of Presidential Decree No. 1602 or Illegal Gambling. (Hans Amancio)
3 drug suspects nabbed
A checkpoint led to the arrest of three drug suspects, including a minor, in Caloocan City on Thursday night.
Police nabbed Paul San Juan, 19, jobless; Marc Japos, 18, waiter; and a 17-year-old boy, all residents of Barangay 177, Caloocan City.
Around 9 p.m., elements from Police Community Precinct 6 led by Sr. Insp. Adonis Paul Escamillian were conducting a checkpoint when they flagged down the three suspects on board a motorcycle.
The suspects allegedly resisted and tried to get away, which resulted in a chase.
Upon apprehension, policemen claimed that they found an improvised gun in Japos' waist.
Police said that a bladed weapon was seized from the minor while three heat-sealed plastic sachets of shabu were seized from San Juan.
Meanwhile, three live ammunition of caliber .9mm were also recovered from them.
Charges will be filed against the Japos and San Juan while the minor will be brought to City Social Welfare Development. (Kate Louise Javier)
