Many wonder how Ms. Baby F. Go became rich enough to have produced one movie after another and so she was dubbed the “Queen of Maindie Movies.”
Baby F. Go
In 2012, she became CEO, president and executive producer of BG Productions International. With the many awards that her films have received from award-giving bodies both here and abroad, Go has hogged the limelight and endeared herself to local stars and directors.
She revealed it was awarded director Joel Lamangan who lured her into filmmaking.
“I was introduced to him when we meet in a bank and he told me about filmmaking and asked if I would like to try producing a movie. He was very convincing in his humble way and he seemed honest enough. Kaya na-convince niya ako immediately. He has become one of my favorite directors.”
Go knew early on that you cannot earn much money from indie films. But what compensated her for her efforts were the awards and recognition that her indie films received. “They are more fulfilling than monetary rewards,” she said. “But of course, kailangan din kumita para nakapag-produce ulit. My films are earning a little from broadcast rights so tuloy-tuloy kahit papaano ang production ko,”
As for her sources of income, Go has various businesses and she is into real estate. She also has an art gallery and she sells healthy coffee concoctions made from vegetables.
Even with her busy schedule, Go makes time for charity and humanitarian work. She conducts regular medical and dental missions under her PC Good Heart Foundation. She also gives scholarship grants to poor but deserving students.
Although she became successful in business, Go didn't have any knowledge or experience in business.
“Hindi ako pinapayagan ng asawa ko na lumabas sa bahay except when I bring my children to school,” she said.
But meeting fellow mothers gave her the idea to do a little business, like selling them snacks and other cheap stuffs.
Soon, when she got older and more exposed to the outside world, Go learned about other businesses like real estate. Her husband was of course surprised when he found out his wife has become a successful businesswoman and movie producer.
“Nagulat siya when he saw my picture sa newspapers at balita ako sa TV,” she said. “I am married to a Chinese whose parents are pure Chinese at sila ang magagaling sa negosyo. Anyway, kahit Filipino ako at simpleng probinsyana lang (from Dumaguete), minahal ako ng mother-in-law ko at kahit mga sisters-in-law ko. Sabi nila nakita daw nila sa mukha ko na may suerte ako sa negosyo.”
This year, Go intends to produce no less than five movies, three of them to be directed by Louie Ignacio, one of which is “Almost a Love Story” which is BG Productions’ first mainstream movie. Ignacio is also fielding an entry to the 2018 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. The two others will be directed by Joel Lamangan and Mel Chionglo.
Incidentally, Ms. Go marks her birth anniversary on Feb. 5, but she will celebrate it on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Marco Polo Hotel in Ortigas.
