Nissan Philippines Inc. (NPI) unveiled a special treat for the Philippine market last week, the grand reveal of the GT-R Nismo. Present at the launch was Hiroshi Tamura, GT-R Chief Product Specialist to talk about the Nismo variant’s characteristics.
The GT-R Nismo is a GT-R modified by Nismo, Nissan’s aftermarket tuning arm, Nissan Motorsports (Nismo), that specializes in increasing the performance of its most iconic models. This GT-R
is a street legal, consumer version inspired by its racecars that competed in the 2012 Nurburgring 24-Hour endurance race. It’s also very similar to the GT-R Nismo, that set a lap timeon the Nurburgring track in Germany of 7 minutes, 8.679 seconds making it the 8th fastest car around the track, on record.

Interior
Inside, the GT-R Nismo is equipped with Recaro driver and passenger seats in leather and Alcantara. The three spoke steering wheel is also wrapped in Alcantara and features a red center marker and red stitching. The tachometer has a red design and the speedometer has a carbon fiber finish. The rest of the interior has discreet red stitching on the seats, center console and door trim.
The makers of the Gran Turismo video game, Polyphony Digital, were tapped by Nismo to make a video game inspired multi function display which shows eleven pages of information, including mechanical and driving information, acceleration, brake pedal pressure, steering angle with a recording function and playback.
There’s also navigation and Bluetooth hands free and music streaming to the 11 speaker Bose entertainment system. To enhance the driving experience, the Bose system has Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to silence undesirable frequencies from being heard inside, and Active Sound Control which allows desired frequencies to be heard in cabin.
GT-R chief product specialist, Hiroshi Tamura points out the improvements over the regular GT-R.
Powerplant
Under the hood is the hand assembled 3.8-liter DOHC V6 VR38DETT engine equipped with the same high-flow, large diameter twin turbochargers used in the GT-R Nismo GT3 racecar. There’s the Optimized Individual Ignition Timing for each cylinder and upgraded fuel pump. This puts out 600-Psat 6,800rpm and max torque of 637-Nm at 3,600rpm. This is mated to an advanced sequential six-speed dual-clutch system (wet clutch) which automatically selects the next highest and next lowest gear for quick shifts.
The GT-R NISMO has an ATTESA E-TS (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for all Terrain with Electronic Torque Split) independent rear transaxle, all wheel drive system, which optimizes weight distribution and handling capability. The all-wheel drive system is rear drive biased and varies torque split to the wheels depending on speed, lateral acceleration, steering angles, tire slip, road surface and yaw rate.
Handling
Unique to Nismo, body rigidity is increased. Despite this, ride comfort is retained even with stiffer suspension. The suspension setup was tuned by Nismo for agility, road holding and handling finesse while retaining refinement. The vehicle includes three driver selectable suspension modes: Comfort, Normal, and R for circuit applications.
Brakes are Brembo monoblock six-piston front and four piston rear calipers.Discs are Brembo 390-mmfront and 380-mm rear, full-floating, cross-drilled withtwo-piece, high-stiffness brake pads.
The GT-R Nismo rolls on rigid metallic black, six-spoke Rays forged lightweight aluminum 20-inch wheels, which features knurling insidethebead lip tohelp keepthetiresfrom slipping aroundthewheels under heavy acceleration orbraking. The tires are specially developed by Dunlop with a NISMO-specific compound, the front measures 255/40 ZRF20 and the rear tires are 285/35ZRF20.
Aerodynamics
Nismo developed an aero package using the latest Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) techniques to analyze airflow, the result is improved roadholding which also minimizes the impact of drag. The GT-R Nismo’s aerodynamics are tuned to spread out the downforce equally front and rear at all speeds.
“Nissan is excited to let the Philippine market experience the result of Nismo’s longstanding expertise in motorsports and ultra high-performancecars. We are starting with the GT-R Nismo and customers can surely expect other nameplates under the Nismo lineup in the future,” said Ramesh Narasimhan, Nissan Philippines,Inc.president and managing director.
Each GT-R Nismo is assembled in Tochigi, Japan and the engines are hand assembled in Yokohama, Japan. Three GT-R Nismo units were made available at the Nissan Quezon Avenue - Nissan High Performance Center. Despite offered at nearly twice the price of the regular GT-R, all three units have already been sold.
