By Jerome Lagunzad Defending champion Arellano University dominated Lyceum, 25-16, 25-17, 25-11, yesterday to extend its unbeaten run to five games in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City. Necole Ebuen scored 11 points while Mary Anne Esguerra, Regine Arocha and Andrea Marzan contributed 10 points apiece as the Lady Chiefs needed just 65 minutes to maintain their hold on the solo lead in the eliminations. Arellano coach Obet Javier, who capitalized on the short affair to shuffle his lineup, expressed satisfaction with the way his girls performed after a four-set win over Jose Rizal University last week. Javier, however, noted that the Lady Chiefs’ defense had plenty of things to be desired after managing just one block against the Lady Pirates. “Reception, blocking… Kailangan naming magpursigi lalo na at mabibigat yung mga susunod na kalaban namin,” said Javier. The Lady Chiefs return to action tomorrow against the University of Perpetual Help and fellow unbeaten San Beda Lady Red Spikers on Friday. Earlier, Perpetual downed JRU, 25-21, 22-25, 25-14, 25-21, to move in third place at 4-1. Maria Lourdes Clemente and Cindy Imbo sparkled anew for the Lady Altas with 19 and 18 points, respectively, including combined 26 hits and eight blocks. JRU dropped to 2-3 while Lyceum slipped to 1-4. In men’s division, Perpetual Help swept JRU, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, to remain undefeated in five games. Ronniel Rosales fired 13 points while Rey Taneo and Joebert Almodiel chipped in 12 points apiece as the Altas’ relentless attacks weakened the Bombers’ defense.
