Defending champion Arellano University recovered from a stumble as it edged Jose Rizal University (JRU), 25-11, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16, yesterday to remain unbeaten at the helm in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Chiefs caught themselves off-guard in the second set before regaining their composure in the last two frames to post their fourth straight win.

Regine Arocha paced Arellano with 20 points built on 14 kills and five aces while skipper Mary Anne Esguerra and Necole Ebuen helped with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Arellano coach Obet Javier was not pleased though.

“Meron pa rin kaming tendency na kapag nakakakuha kami ng isang set, nagre-relax kaagad kami. Yun ang number one na kailangan naming baguhin,” said Javier.

Shola Alvarez bannered JRU’s charge in the offensive end along with Dolly Verzosa, but the Lady Bombers lost their steam in the fourth to trail behind after an 11-all tie.

With the loss, JRU evened its record to 2-2 despite Alvarez scoring 19 points.

In men’s division, Arellano also needed four sets in besting JRU, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, for the solo lead at 4-0.

Kevin Liberato and Demy Lapuz conspired for 26 points including 17 hits for the Chiefs, who survived their erratic plays.

Arellano committed 34 errors.

The Bombers dropped to their fourth consecutive defeat in as many outings with Wenjo Lahaylahay topscoring with only 10 points.
