Cebu City – A passenger ferry and a cargo ship collided in Lawis Ledge in Talisay City on Friday afternoon.
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Cebu Station Commander Jerome Cayabyab said the M/V Lite Ferry 20 was bound for Tubigon, Bohol from the port of Cebu City with 54 passengers when it was hit by the LCT Seamine 8, which was on its way to Naga City, Cebu.
The incident happened at 12:55 p.m. The Coast Guard received the report at past 1 p.m.
“There were no reported injuries on either vessel. It was initially reported that the cargo ship had hit the passenger ferry,” Cayabyab said in a phone interview.
Cayabyab said the captains of the two vessels decided to proceed to their destinations since there was only “minimal” damage from the collision.
“We were not able to put them on hold since they were already on board, they have already departed from the ports,” he said.
Cayabyab said the Coast Guard substations in Naga City and Tubigon town were instructed to assist the vessels.
At the moment, the Coast Guard withheld further comment on the incident while it waits for the ships captains to submit a marine protest.
Christopher Go, in a Facebook post, said his friend, John Robson, who was a passenger on Lite Ferry 20, saw the LCT Seamine 8 approaching “yet neither of the ship took evasive action.”
“Fortunately the damage was not extensive, but still there has to be a coast guard investigation on this! This could have been fatal,” Go said.
Last November 1, the Lite ferry 20 collided with a motorized boat off Tubigon town in Bohol.
A 26-year-old mother, Editha Abellana, of Bagong Banwa Island, Tubigon, died in that incident.
Lawis Ledge is said to be a dangerous area for ships going to and leaving Cebu City port.
In 2013, at least 71 were killed when the ferry Saint Thomas Aquinas sank after colliding with cargo ship Sulpicio Express 7 near Cebu port.
The ferry was carrying 830 passengers and crew, and the cargo ship, which did not sink, had 36 crew members.
The Coast Guard had said it has recorded several incidents at the same site.
