The Philippine government has turned over to Germany a digital artwork depicting unity as a token of friendship on the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Germany’s reunification earlier this month.

Philippine Ambassador Ma. Theresa Dizon-de Vega presented the digital artwork to German Federal Foreign Office Director-General for Asia and Pacific Affairs, Amb. Petra Sigmund in a simple ceremony in Berlin last Oct. 6.
Created by renowned musician and Filipino artist Nityalila Saulo, the artwork features the German word, “Einheit” or unity, written in the indigenous Filipino script of Baybayin.
The central message of the piece conveys that no wall can divide the human spirit.
In the turnover, the Embassy explained that the blocks in the artwork represent the remnants of the fallen Berlin Wall and a window for those who witnessed the struggles of division and oppression.
“The Baybayin characters of Einheit (Aynhayt) come together to form an embrace, which represents the humility of clashing ideologies, the reunification of separated families, and the pivotal moment when the fall of the wall became a symbol of hope and unity,” the Embassy said.
The artwork was inspired by Bauhaus art style, a modern art movement with a unique aesthetic that combines fine art and design, which originated in Germany
On Oct. 3, 1990, the Bundestag and the People’s Chamber of the West and East Germany, respectively, ratified a unification treaty transforming the two-parts of divided Berlin into one Germany.
