It was an emotional Christmas for some residents of Calapan town after a tornado wreaked havoc in two adjacent barangays of Oriental Mindoro on Dec. 25 during the onslaught of Typhoon “Ursula.”

“Ayon sa mga residente na nakasaksi sa pangyayari, mga bandang alas dos ng mapansin nila ang pagdaan ng buhawi sa bahagi ng Barangay Balingayan patungo sa Canubing II, Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro,” the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said in a post. (According to residents who witnessed the occurrence, it was around two o’clock when they noticed a tornado pass Barangay Balingayan toward to Canubing II, Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.)
The incident left some residents homeless on Christmas Day after six houses were partially damaged.
Meanwhile, the wrath of Ursula also inflicted major damage on the 50-year-old San Jose Public Market in Occidental Mindoro.
In a Facebook post, store owner Mavel Ison shared her frustration after seeing the aftermath of the storm’s fury. “ 50 years of existence ngayon ko lang naranasan ito. Six days na lang 2020 na, pero ganito pa din nangyari.” (In 50 years, this is the first time I’ve experienced something like this. The year 2020 is coming in six days, and yet this happens.)
The victims continue to appeal for help through in-kind or cash donations.
