Davao del Norte town suspends operations of pedicabs for GCQ violations

By Armando Fenequito Jr.  DAVAO CITY -- The municipal government of Santo Tomas in Davao del Norte has suspended pedicabs or tricycles from operating, starting Wednesday, May 5, after violations of general community quarantine (GCQ) protocols on physical distancing and operating without cellophane partitions were reported. (Santo Tomas Municipal Information Office / MANILA BULLETIN) (Santo Tomas Municipal Information Office / MANILA BULLETIN) In a statement, Santo Tomas Municipal Information Officer Mart Sambalud said, concerned citizens took to social media to express disgust as pedicabs swarmed the streets on Monday, May 4, the first day implementation of GCQ in Santo Tomas, Davao del Norte. Sambalud said the Municipal Task Force on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has sought the suspension of the tricycle operations in the town on Monday evening "to protect the welfare of the public". He said the task force expressed alarm over what they described as "a serious problem if these violations continue to happen under GCQ amid the COVID-19 pandemic." Sambalud said the presence of uniformed personnel in the streets will be heightened to enforce the GCQ quarantine protocol. Sambalud said the affected pedicab drivers and operators will be given assistance that could compensate to their income loss due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. He said the assistance was expected to cover each family's additional necessities amid the COVID-19 pandemic, aside from another round of food packs that will be distributed by the municipal government of Santo Tomas to the transport sector's families. Sambalud said the task force also received photos showing motorists appeared to be not wearing helmet while driving, and motorcycle drivers violating the back ride policy. He said the municipal government was determined to clear the streets of undisciplined public transport drivers and motorists, and efforts are now underway to revoke the provisions of pedicab operations as provided in EO 18 series of 2020 and to review the existing ordinance on the operation of motorcycle-for-hire (MCH) units including pedicabs or tricycles.
