Robredo urges employers to keep in-step with technological advancements

Vice President Ma. Leonor "Leni" Robredo on Tuesday called on employers to focus on collaboration and partnerships towards promoting inclusive growth amid the emerging technology in their companies.

Robredo said employers should adopt new business models and push for a development agenda to allow Filipino workers to cope with the technological advancement in different industries.
“Economic empowerment leads to freedom. Freedom leads to the ability to make better choices. Better choices lead to better lives. This is why the need to share progress among our people is paramount in our nation’s journey,” she said.
“Remember that genuine progress is not just about the creation of wealth; it is about the ability of organizations to push for sustainable reforms that will allow wealth and knowledge to trickle down to the poorest of the poor,” she stressed.
The Vice President was the keynote speaker at the 40th National Conference of Employers held at Marriott Hotel Manila in Pasay City.
The event, which had a theme, “Future-proofing Business and Industry,” was organized by the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) to provide employers the opportunity to discuss key issues on employment, labor-management relations, and general business climate.
In her speech delivered during the conference, Robredo said that majority of the country’s business leaders saw the need to transform their companies into digital businesses to enable future growth.
Robredo, however, cited the barriers to digital transformation in the Philippines such as lack of strategy, equipped workforce and ICT infrastructure as well as poverty, hunger, and security concerns, among others.
“How do we improve skill sets and embed new technology in our services and processes? How do we attract young, vibrant, and tech-savvy millennials to join and invigorate our nation’s workforce? How can we equip the ordinary Filipino with the necessary knowledge to survive this new digital age? How do we ensure that no one is left behind?” she asked.
“The answer lies both in improving our competitive advantage and in turning our focus on constant collaboration. We need to come together and disrupt systems. We need to adopt fresh, new business models. We must build consensus among organizations and push for a development agenda,” Robredo said.
The Vice President then asked employers and their firms to join her office in its advocacies, especially in helping poor Filipinos.
“I hope we can exchange ideas on how to widen our engagements by integrating digital solutions in the workplace, and introducing new technology in far-flung communities,” Robredo said.
“Government cannot do it alone, just as the private sector cannot do it alone. I cannot do it alone. During these extraordinary times, each one is called to carry the torch of leadership and light the path for others,” she added.
