"I firmly believe that with this measure, we will be able to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of sports development,’’ Go said, pointing out that the measure was included in President Duterte's 2019 State of the Nation Address.
Go thanked Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate committee on basic education, arts, and culture, "for showing equal passion and dedication for the development of Philippine sports and our youth, and earnestly pushing for the passage of this measure.’’
Go, chairman of the Senate sports committee, also thanked the other members of the bicameral conference committee – senators Pia Cayetano, Juan Edgardo Angara, and Francis Tolentino, and congressmen Roman Romulo, Eric Martinez, Mark Go, Victor Yap, and France Castro.
He also thanked the Philippines Sports Commission (PSC), the Department of Education (DepEd), the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), and the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) "for their commitment that shall allow us to hit the ground running once this measure is signed by President Duterte."
"Mayroon na tayong National Academy of Sports, finally, pwede na pong sabay while nag-aaral, pwedeng mag-training," he added.
(Now that we have the NAS, it's finally possible to study while training.)
In yesterday’s plenary session, Gatchalian told Senate President Vicente C. Sotto III that he is proud to move for the ratification of this legislation that will finally provide the financial, infrastructural, and policy support from the government that other countries have bestowed upon their athletes for a long time.
"This will give our own athletes and aspiring world champions the education, training, and opportunity to bring home the gold, honor and pride to our country.
"And for those who will decide to pursue other paths and careers after graduation from the sports academy, this bill was crafted to ensure that the curriculum shall provide the student-athletes with a holistic quality education to enable them to excel in their respective sports, as well as pursue their chosen profession or career,’’ Gatchalian said.
He added: "It is time to provide solid support to our own athletes and give them the opportunity to be the sports icons and world champions that our Filipino fans will cheer for, be proud of, and respect. It is my hope that this bill will be the crucial first step towards that goal."
