PH's ranking in Global Innovation Index improves

The Philippines has jumped three spots in the Global Innovation Index (GII), a ranking of innovative countries in the world.

From top 56, the Philippines climbed to the 53rd spot in this year's GII that was launched at the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) Headquarters in Geneva.

For the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), it was "an improvement to 2023’s ranking."

GII is an economic tool that drives development through considering multi-dimensional facets of innovations.

It also adopts a system of ranking based on actionable tools by economies that include institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, credit, investment, linkages, the creation and absorption of knowledge and creative outputs.

Among the 38 lower-middle-income group economies, the Philippines ranked 3rd.

According to the DFA, the country's main innovation strengths are in high-tech imports (4th), high-tech exports (1st) and utility models by origin (13th).

Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Carlos Sorreta represented the country at the official launch ceremonies of the 2024 GII at WIPO headquarters.

He noted that the Philippines is considered as one of the "strong overperformers over time," exceeding expectations for its level of development.

WIPO had also described the Philippines as one of the decade’s innovation achievers.
