Marcos OKs recommendation to sack BI chief Tansingco

President Marcos is set to relieve Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Norman Tansingco over the undetected departure of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo from the Philippines in July, Communications Secretary Cesar Chavez confirmed.

This developed after Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Crispin Remulla said he had suggested to the President to replace Tansingco amid ongoing investigations on how Guo managed to leave the country undetected.

In a text message on Monday afternoon, Sept. 9, Chavez confirmed that Marcos agreed with Remulla's recommendation to find a new BI commissioner.

"Yes, confirmed. That (Alice Guo's departure) is the reason," he said.

Chavez, however, did not disclose if Marcos already has a replacement for Tansingco.

On Monday, Remulla said that he asked President Marcos to "relieve and replace" Tansingco, whom Remulla earlier said failed to promptly inform the DOJ that Guo had already left the Philippines.

"Marami kaming naging problema (We've had too many problems)," Remulla said.

In an interview with reporters last week, President Marcos said that all those implicated in Guo's escape would be fired and charged.

"All of those who are implicated in assisting Alice Guo to leave the Philippines illegally as a fugitive from justice will certainly pay the price," he said.

"Hindi lang namin sila sisibakin, kakasuhan pa namin sila dahil ang kanilang ginawa ay labag sa batas at (We will not only fire them but also charge them because they violated our laws and it was) against all of the interests of the Philippine judicial system," he added.
