The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) on Tuesday assured the orderliness of all jail facilities under its care this Christmas with the expected influx of families and friends of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL).

BJMP spokesman Chief Inspector Xavier Solda said the bureau had placed all its jails under red alert.
He assured that the assigned BJMP personnel will have no respite during the holidays to secure the cells and foil any jailbreak attempt by the inmates.
Solda said all jail personnel are not allowed to go on leave and should be on their respective posts from December 24 to December 26.
The next red alert status for the holiday season will be on December 31, and January 1 and 2, 2020.
Solda said it is customary for the bureau to be on high alert during the holidays to avert possible jail breaks as visitors are expected to flock to the prison cells at this time.
As millions of Filipinos are on vacation, Solda said BJMP Chief Allan Iral wants that incidents of inmates fleeing from prison will now be very remote, if not highly improbable.
Solda said that jail guards assigned to man the BJMP-controlled prison cells will be on duty 24/7.
Even during the holiday break, Solda said BJMP jail guards will have to work double time while BJMP officials conduct frequent and strategic inspections of all the jails under its care.
“The BJMP should not let its guard down especially now that everyone is busy with their own preparations for Christmas,” said Solda.
On the orders of Iral, Solda warned BJMP personnel of sanctions if they fail to strictly enforce jail rules and regulations in all city, district, provincial, and municipal jails nationwide.
He added that the jail bureau must crack down on all lawless offenses, specifically illegal drugs, inside the jail premises.
Iral has directed all wardens, particularly those assigned to jails with high congestion rates, to enforce an organized visitation system.
The Cebu City Jail has the biggest number of PDLs with 6,041, followed by the Manila City Jail with 5,306, and Quezon City Jail with 3,542.
Solda said activities during the Christmas seasons are only limited to pure visitation due to lack of space for parties.
