South Korea's population mobility kept falling for 15 straight months last month owing to the lackluster housing market and the aging population, statistics office data showed Wednesday.
The number of people who changed their residence stood at 587,000 in March, down 20.1 percent from a year ago, according to Statistics Korea.
It has continued to slide for 15 months since January last year as the aging population refrained from moving to another regions. The housing market downturn also contributed to the lower mobility.
The country's population totaled 51.75 million in 2021, down 90,000 from the previous year.
After peaking in 2020, the population continued to slide amid the rapid population aging.
The population mobility rate, or the number of those who relocated to different parts of the country per 100 people, came in at 13.4 percent in March, down 3.4 percentage points from a year earlier.
