Lucy and Wilma’s on-cam chemistry is for real

“The Sweet Life” hosts Lucy Torres and Wilma Doesnt may be as disparate as day and night in personalities, and backgrounds but they click well on and off screen.
“I’m happy to say na it’s almost four years na we’ve been working together and we see each other every week to tape for the show yet we’ve never clashed,” Lucy tells Manila Bulletin Entertainment Online on the set of Q Channel 11’s lifestyle talk show aired Mondays to Fridays from 5 to 6 p.m.
“We’re just happy together. If we’re happy on the set, we’re happier inside the dressing room because that is where the real craziness happens.”
Wilma agrees: “We tape on Mondays and Tuesdays pero Sunday pa lang, nagte-text na kaming dalawa. Excited kami pareho kasi talagang ‘pag nasa dressing room parang puro kalokohan lang. We’re really friends. ‘Pag may problema ako, I seek advice from her kasi nice person naman talaga s’ya. Gaga lang talaga ako.”
Wilma considers Lucy, whom she first met in 1998 on the set of their first foray into TV acting—ABS-CBN’s defunct sitcom “Richard Loves Lucy”—her "conscience" or "divine intervention," as she prefers to call her.
Despite their obvious bond, however, Wilma insists she calls her own shots when it comes to decision-making, and does not let friendships cross personal boundaries.
The contrast in views and opinions spices up not only their friendship but also their on-cam chemistry. This also livens up their banter with their guests, helping make “The Sweet Life” an entertaining and informative program.
“The Sweet Life” has been awarded a Finalist Certificate in the 2009 New York Festivals and won in 2008 the Catholic Mass Media Awards for Best Talk Show and the Gawad Tanglaw’s Best Lifestyle Show.
Lucy shares that it’s not very difficult to achieve the level of enjoyment they have on the show because she really enjoys everything she’s being asked to do, like making arts and crafts projects. She also likes the collaborative nature of the production.
She adds that she’s very involved in the show. “I try to approve 100 percent the projects. Para hindi maipit sa time, the staff gives me a set of proposed projects and I approve or disapprove each one so the next taping day, plantsado na lahat,” the avid crafter avers.
“Ako, panggulo lang,” interjects Lucy’s co-host who has her own segment called “Wilma Does It” that gives tips on sundry topics. “Chismosang kapitbahay lang ang drama ko pero ‘pag hindi ko naiintindihan ang discussion I really ask questions. Para maintindihan din ng mga viewers na kagaya ko din lang ang thinking.”
Lucy and Wilma are content with and confident of “The Sweet Life” that they don’t find Q Channel 11’s new daily talk show, “Full Time Moms,” a competition.
“It’s nice that the programming of Q is siksik,” says Lucy as Wilma exclaims, “Pareho ko silang kumare,” referring to “Full Time Moms” hosts Christine Jacob-Sandejas and Suzi Entrata-Abrera. “Magkaiba naman ang format ng mga show namin.”
So what can the viewers expect from “The Sweet Life”?
“We’ve introduced a lot of new segments and it has been doing well, ratings-wise,” replies Lucy. “We get the audience more involved because they can send in videos. We really value the input of viewers because ultimately it’s them that we want to please so there have been some segments that we thought would work but had to be scrapped to give way to those that the audience really wants. So it’s really for them. They’re the boss. We just follow.
“It’s been fun because there have been constant changes para we keep on growing. We look forward to the days when we report to the studio to tape and that’s what we want to communicate with the viewers na whatever we’re doing – whether serious or silly – we are enjoying it.”
