Nic Cabanero fired a career-high 33 points to lift the University of Santo Tomas to a 69-60 victory against host school Adamson in the opening of the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Jerom Lastimosa cut the Falcons’ deficit by three after a triple, 60-63, with 56.4 seconds to go but Cabanero proved to be unstoppable from all sides, who pulled up with another jumper and sank two free throws in the finals seconds to secure the win for the Growling Tigers.
Cabanero was the only double-digit scorer for UST who went 13-of-18 from the field, posting 33 points including four assists and one steal with Christian Manaytay and import Adame Faye behind after tallying seven and six points, respectively.
“Well, it’s overwhelming kasi grabe ‘yong suporta ng Thomasian communtiy. We’re very thankful and blessed andyan sila. I mean, through thick and thin, andyan sila may mga bumibitaw pero mayroon pa ring mga nadadagdag,” said debuting head coach Bal David.
The Growling Tigers couldn’t entirely untangle themselves from the Soaring Falcons after a slow third period where they both scored only six, but the final frame was where UST played all their tricks right.
“Sobrang overwhelmed and blessed ako kasi pinagdadasal ko (tong panalo). I’m turning 19 kasi this Monday," said Cabanero.
"Lagi kong pinagdadasal na ibigay sa amin ‘yong first win. Hindi lang ‘yong first win, this upcoming games din kasi feel ko ‘yon magdi-dictate sa amin in the future. Dito namin makukuha ‘yong kumpiyansa namin (heading into the next games)," he added.
Lenda Douanga and Joshua Yerro paced Adamson with 13 points apiece while Didat Hanapi and Lastimosa added a combined 20 points.
The pre-recorded ceremony featured the returning athletes competing in different events from participating member schools before the tip-off.
UST will take on De La Salle for their next game at Philsports Arena in Pasig on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
