NP warned vs alliance with party-list groups
A pro-administration partylist lawmaker advised Thursday the Nacionalista Party (NP) to be wary about its link up with a coalition of left-leaning partylist groups, saying it would pose a serious threat to democracy in the event that Senator Manuel Villar, its standard bearer, is eventually elected.
In a press statement, Bantay Party-list Rep Jovito Palparan warned that NP’s alleged alliance with Makabayan party, a left-leaning coalition of partylist groups, may “cause all peace and freedom-loving Filipinos to worry.
“There is nothing wrong with having to coalesce with one or more political parties as this is within the purview of the democratic space that abounds in our midst. There is nothing wrong if coalitions exist for as long as this shall redound to the strengthening of our country’s democratic processes, institutions, and ideals,” Palparan said.
“But it’s totally wrong, despicable, outrageous and must immediately be stopped if coalitions of political parties are made with groups that don’t have a cinch of belief in the democracy that we have today,” he added.
“We call on the Nacionalista Party, Senator Manny Villar, and others who still profess adherence to God, country, and people to be wary against the anti-people designs being hatched by the Makabayan Party,” he claimed.
Villar on Monday formally announced the adoption of Reps. Satur Ocampo (Party-list, Bayan Muna) and Liza Maza (Party-list, Gabriela) as guest candidates in the senatorial slate of the NP.
Ocampo and Maza, who are under Makabayan, a coalition of left-wing party-list groups, pledged to support the candidacy of Villar and his running-mate, Senator Loren Legarda. It was the first time the left-wing groups will endorse candidates for president and vice president.
Villar said theirs was an unlikely alliance, but added that his party and the left-leaning groups are one in fighting poverty and giving justice and better life to Filipinos.
The partnership was stalled last month when Villar merged with the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL) of Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., who is running for senator under NP. Villar later came out with an announcement that NP is cutting its ties with the KBL, but retaining Marcos in its senatorial slate.
