PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial described the indefinite suspension on Calvin Abueva for his controversial actions over the weekend as a way to help the Phoenix Pulse star mend his ways.
Marcial handed the biggest penalty of his tenure by slapping an indefinite ban coupled plus a fine of P70,000 on Abueva for his lewd gesture at Blackwater rookie Ray Parks Jr’s girlfriend Maika Rivera and a clothesline delivered to TNT KaTropa import Terrence Jones.
While the sanction was met with mixed reaction from fans and observers, Marcial said his decision was meant to aid the erring cager.
“Kung sa tingin nila parusa to, sa akin para to tulungan yung bata na mapatuwid siya,” Marcial said in an impromptu press conference held during the San Miguel Beer-NorthPort match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Kung may ipapagawa tayo para tumuwid siya, baka mas gagaling yun at mas magiging superstar pa. May konti lang siyang problema, ayusin natin ang dapat ayusin pero di naman overnight lang,” he added.
Marcial was mentioning about a long process Abueva had to deal in order for the league to reinstate him back in action.
The PBA earlier said in a statement that such possibility will “depend on how and when Abueva makes an apology to those whom he has offended, and how he will henceforth reform in his ways.”
“Dami akong hinihingi na dapat niyang gawin so mag-uusap kami,” Marcial said.
Marcial mentioned that FIBA has already monitored the situation after the clothesline on Jones went viral on social media, even getting exposure from the likes of ESPN and other international sports sites.
NBA players like Denver’s Isaiah Thomas and Golden State’s Andrew Bogut even reacted to the incident, with Thomas saying that “I woulda beat his ass!!!”
“Sabi ni (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Al Panlilio) na maganda daw kasi namomonitor ng FIBA na may ginagawa tayo,” Marcial said.
