Manila Bulletin expresses its sympathy to the millions of people affected by Tropical Storm 'Ondoy'
When tropical storm "Ondoy" hit land on September 26, 2009, there was not much cause for worry as the storm did not appear to have the power to bring forth great devastation. Its winds were not particularly strong, but its rains turned out to be the worst in decades. While several cities and municipalities in five regions were affected, the greatest damage and loss of lives were registered in Metro Manila and in the provinces of Rizal, Bulacan, Batangas, Laguna, Pampanga, and Zambales suffered as well.
Images of the effects of Ondoy in metropolitan and suburban communities demonstrated the wrath that nature can bring. In many areas, the floods went up beyond levels recorded in the past. What were once flood-free areas were submerged as waters rose quickly and did not subside easily.
Many of the victims of tropical storm "Ondoy" will need the assistance of their compatriots and other kind-hearted individuals. The Manila Bulletin and its Chairman Dr. Emilio T. Yap launched on September 30, 2009, a Fund Drive to help the flood victims, with their own donation of P2 million. The proceeds of the fund drive in the total amount of P5,520,808.48 will be turned over on Monday, October 12, 2009, at 12:00 noon at the Manila Bulletin Head Office in Intramuros, Manila, to the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), for equal distribution to the Metro Manila Development Authority Chairman and Provincial Governors of Rizal, Bulacan, Batangas, Laguna, Pampanga, and Zambales, which they may use for food, medicine, clothing, and other expenses, at their sole discretion.
We extend our sympathy to the victims of tropical storm "Ondoy" and express our sincere thanks to our generous Donors, Readers, Advertisers, Friends, and Supporters who helped in generating the funds necessary to help the families in need.
Our thanks and gratitude to everyone!
Maraming, maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat!
