Slim chance at life for conjoined babies

There is a slim chance that the conjoined babies (two heads sharing a single female body), who were born last Tuesday in Sta. Cruz, Manila, will live longer, said the infant's attending physician.
Fabella Medical Center Newborn Unit chief Dr. Melissa Juico said that they have placed the baby, who was described as being "Dicephalus Monozygotic" or a baby with two heads and two necks, under a 2D Echo Examination and abdominal and scanner ultrasound.
The 2D-Echo Examination is a procedure used to check the heart condition of a patient while the abdominal and scanner ultrasound is a process of examining the patient's stomach and brain.
"Sa kasalukuyan ang sanggol ay nasa neo-natal care unit dahil sa kanyang mahinang kalusugan. Sasailalim siya sa 2D Echo examination upang malaman umano ang kalagayan ng kanyang puso at kung ilan ang puso nito. Samantala abdominal ultrasound para sa kanyang tiyan at scanner ultrasound para sa kanyang ulo (Currently the baby is in the neo-natal care unit due to a delicate constitution. The baby will undergo a 2D Echo examination so that the condition of the heart [and how many hearts the baby has] can be determined. The baby will also undergo an abdominal ultrasound for the stomach and a scanner ultrasound for the head)," Juico said.
Though the baby had two heads, Juico noted that the infant had normal body parts when she was born to Chaterin Arciaga, 29, at around 9 p.m. last Tuesday at the said hospital via a Caesarean procedure.
Salvador Arganda Jr., 30, father of the infant and resident of Putatan Village, Muntinlupa City, said that he and his wife both have a family history of having twins.
Arganda said the baby was due to be born on August 3 but his live-in partner complained of intense stomach pain, which prompted them to go to a doctor so that she could undergo an ultrasound procedure.
Examination revealed that the baby was not in the right position and the doctor suggested that Arciaga undergo an immediate operation.
Meanwhile, Arganda appealed to the public to pray for their child, who is now in an incubator.
