San Beda coach Frankie Lim said his squad needs more teamwork and consistency if it wants to win its fourth straight NCAA title this season.
The departure of three marquee players – Sam Ekwe, Pong Escobal, and Ogie Menor – has raised doubts on the Lions’ ability to defend their crown.
Their 83-77 defeat to San Sebastian did not help their cause, but it’s too early to write off the Lions who bounced back against previously unbeaten Arellano, 102-74, last week.
In that win, Garvo Lanete scored a team-high 20 points and three rebounds while American Sudan Daniel, Borgie Hermida, and Jay-R Taganas each had 14 markers. David Marcelo also had 11.
Today, the Lions gun for their third win against College of St. Benilde at 2 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan. Both teams sport 2-1 win-loss cards. In the first game, Letran and Mapua clash at 4 p.m.
Both teams are coming off big wins.
The Knights dumped Perpetual Help, 73-68, while the Cardinals downed the Great Danes, 101-63.
“We hope this win will get our games going,” said Mapua mentor Chito Victolero.
In that win, the Cardinals held AUF's top gun Aaron Santos scoreless and limited Matt Carney to just six points.
Santos had 29 and Carney 24 during AUF’s win over Emilio Aguinaldo College.
The Cardinals also displayed superb teamwork after making 25 assists.
The Knights will rely on RP developmental team mainstays RJ Jazul and Rey Guevarra, who were contributed immensely to the team’s first win against Perpetual. Jazul finished with 24 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the rainbow territory while Guevarra had 14.
