The sustainable choice

091319RoadSense1 The Toyota Corolla Altis has just stepped into another world. With a variant driven by a hybrid electric engine, the Altis has become part of sustainable mobility.  And any motorist who chooses this model for the next car makes a strong statement on his or her concern for the future environment. It’s perfect that Toyota chose its mainstream, high-volume Corolla model to be the first in its line-up to feature three of Toyota’s latest technologies in one variant – especially a hybrid electric engine. As Elijah Marcial commented in her presentation of the new model, everyone in the room either had a Corolla sometime in the past or knew someone who had.  The Corolla has been there for a very long time. It was launched globally in 1966; and in the Philippines in 1989. Now, motorists who are shopping for a new car have a choice to drive what they say is their concern for the environment.  The Altis 1.8V HV is priced from P1.580-million (the price of a pickup truck or an SUV). A perfectly-worded statement from the Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) declares the highlights of this variant: “The 1.8V HV variant is powered by a VVT-I, 4-Cylinder In-Line DOHC, 16 Valve engine with 1,798cc displacement and electric motor, 121hp total system maximum output, and 142Nm maximum torque @ 3,600 rpm. “Drivers can experience a smooth and quiet ride with better fuel efficiency while the battery self-charges during the drive. Three driving modes are available (Sport, Eco, Normal), giving the driver more control.” Other features that make the Altis 1.8V HV truly extraordinary are its high-tech safety features –  the Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) and the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). For those who are prone to stray from their lanes, the LTA will help keep the vehicle centered, applying force on the steering to assist the driver in avoiding lane departure. Meanwhile, when driving at cruise control, the DRCC will keep the vehicle at constant preset speed and will adjust within the set cruise speed upon detection of another vehicle in front to maintain appropriate distance. The “full speed range following” function enables the vehicle to decelerate to 0km/h when the vehicle in front comes to a full stop. This is a variation of the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) which is included in the Hiace Super Grandia Elite. Naturally, the all-new Corolla has been designed to leave an elegant and prestigious road presence. The signature Toyota trapezoidal lower grille shows off the strong and wide stance of the all-new Corolla Altis. While the vehicle’s side view silhouette has a dynamic and active look, emphasizing the low center-of-gravity with the voluminous front and rear bumpers. Sportiness to the overall look is enhanced by the 17” alloy wheels (for 1.8 V HV and 1.6V CVT). All variants are equipped with 7 SRS airbags, Anti-Lock Brake System with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, and 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts for the driver and all passengers. The regular variants of the All-New Corolla Altis are powered by a Dual VVT-I, 4-Cylinder In-Line DOHC, 16 Valve engine which ensures smooth acceleration, minimal noise, and better fuel efficiency. Displacement is at 1,598cc, with 121hp maximum output, and 153Nm maximum torque @5,200 rpm. All variants have MacPherson Strut/Double Wishbone Type suspension, providing excellent handling and a more stable and comfortable ride. The price of the all-new Corolla Altis starts at P999,000 for the 1.6E MT and P1.5 million for the 1.8V HV. With its extraordinary features, let me say that this hybrid technology puts the new Corolla model in the category of the few proper nouns that deserve the article “The” before its name.
