The observance of the Holy Week was generally peaceful in 478 jail facilities managed by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), a ranking official stated on Tuesday, April 11.

BJMP Acting Chief Director Ruel Rivera said that there were "zero" untoward incidents in all of its jail facilities during last week's Holy Week break. “This is on top of the successful conduct of all Lenten activities in all its jails nationwide,’’ the BJMP noted. During the Holy Week, Rivera stressed that the BJMP has implemented strict security measures to ensure the safety of the persons deprived of liberty (PDL) and personnel in its jail facilities nationwide. He emphasized that regular jail inspections and greyhound operations in the jail cells were conducted to ensure that no contraband passes through the BJMP-manned cells. “The BJMP crisis management units were placed on alert and on standby for likely emergency situations during the holidays. These measures proved to be effective, as no major incidents were reported during the observance,’’ the BJMP added. With the Holy Week over, the BJMP bared that it is preparing for the summer season by ensuring that all jail facilities are "well-maintained, fully operational, and adequately equipped" to handle any challenges that may arise during the season. The BJMP said all the security measures done during the Holy Week will also be implemented this summer season. Increasing the number of personnel on duty is also considered especially for facilities that are among the most congested. “Communication and coordination with other law enforcement agencies is also a priority in order to mitigate the anticipated unfavorable effects of the summer heat on PDL and in jail facilities,’’ the BJMP disclosed. Among the BJMP’s top areas of concern this summer are water and power supplies, health of PDL, and communicable diseases that are highly likely to worsen because of the heat and overcrowding. Health personnel of the BJMP National Headquarters, regional offices, and jail units were on alert and standby for possible emergency situations on the ground. “The BJMP is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for PDL and personnel in all its facilities, and it will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that this goal is achieved,” Rivera asserted.
