ILOILO CITY — The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has expanded free Wi-Fi to more than 2,000 public areas in Western Visayas.
The DICT launched the program during the kickoff of the National ICT Month celebration at University of the Philippines Visayas (UP Visayas) on Monday, June 1.
DICT Western Visayas Director Reynaldo Sy said a total of 2,020 new public sites have free Wi-Fi access in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, and Iloilo provinces as well as the regional capital of Iloilo City.
Sy said free Wi-Fi can be found at state universities and colleges (SUCs), public schools, government hospitals, government health centers, public libraries, public parks, and transportation terminals.
Despite the challenges, the DICT is prioritizing the installation of free Wi-Fi at public schools in far-flung areas.
The expansion of free Wi-Fi access in Western Visayas is part of DICT’s 10th anniversary as a government agency.
Present during the launching were DICT Undersecretaries Faye Condez de Sagon and Leonido Pulido III as well as DICT Assistant Secretaries Pinky Jimenez, Christian Mark Guingcangco, and June Vincent Manuel Gaudan.
Representatives from local government units (LGUs) Western Visayas were also present.
