Allianz expects Philippine insurance to defy uneven global growth trends

Philippine life insurers are poised for a decade of double-digit expansion that will significantly outpace global peers, driven by prolonged elevated interest rates and the widening regional gap in financial protection, according to Allianz PNB Life Insurance Inc.
Henry Yang, chief investment officer of Allianz PNB, wrote in a May 29 commentary that domestic life insurance market is projected to expand at an average annual rate of 9.6 percent over the next 10 years.
That growth rate eclipses the 4.9 percent annual expansion forecast for global life insurance markets over the same period, signaling that the country remains a key outperformer in an era of uneven global growth.
The projected expansion also outpaces the country’s anticipated economic output. Allianz PNB forecasts the domestic insurance sector’s growth will run ahead of the Philippines’ projected nominal gross domestic product growth of 8.3 percent over the decade.
Yang noted that this dynamic reflects the increasing relevance of insurance products to the country’s broader economic and social development.
The broader Asian region continues to act as the primary engine for global insurance growth, a trend accelerated by demographic shifts and a stark deficit in private safety nets. While Allianz expects the total global insurance market—encompassing life, property and casualty, and health lines—to grow by about 5.3 percent annually over the next decade, the expansion will be distributed unevenly across geographic regions.
“Wider Asia continues to be the world’s growth engine, driven by the need for private provision amid accelerating demographic change, and the Philippines is very much part of that story,” Yang said. “Asia in particular still has a lot of catching up to do in terms of health coverage and financial protection.”
Health insurance, which currently represents the smallest segment of the Philippine market, is projected to be its most dynamic component.
Allianz PNB projects local health insurance premiums to rise 8.3 percent annually over the next decade, outperforming the global health insurance growth average of 6.7 percent.
The structural upside follows a strong performance in 2025, when the total local insurance industry expanded by 12.2 percent, pushing total premium volume to approximately ₱565 billion. The expansion was anchored by the life insurance segment, which surged 16.9 percent as growing middle class and heightened financial awareness among consumers fueled demand.
Conversely, property and casualty insurance recorded a modest 5.6 percent gain, while the health segment experienced a contraction following unusually high growth cycles in previous years.
Despite the recent growth, the domestic market remains significantly underpenetrated. Total insurance premiums accounted for just 1.9 percent of the Philippine economy in 2025, with local consumers spending an average of ₱4,870 per capita on insurance coverage. This low baseline provides a long runway for institutional asset managers and underwriters looking to deploy long-term capital.
“For the Philippine life insurance industry, this environment is both a challenge and a strategic opportunity: to close protection gaps, support long-term investment in the local economy, and help build financial resilience for Filipino families,” Yang said.
