Nartatez vows to run after attackers of cops during Labor Day protest

Hitting a police officer while in the performance is like hitting the entire police force.
And the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., is one of them and that’s why he will never let this pass.
On Sunday, May 3, Nartatez has committed to run after the protesters who attacked the policemen during the Labor Day protest in Manila on May 1, adding that a fast-tracked investigation had been ordered to identify the suspects using all available evidence including CCTV footage, body camera recordings, and videos circulating on social media.
“We will pursue the identification and arrest of those responsible using all available evidence, including video footage and witness accounts. We are preparing appropriate criminal charges now,” said Nartatez.
Tensions briefly escalated during the Labor Day protest along Kalaw Avenue in Manila when a rallyist, who wore a face cover, suddenly punched a police officer assigned to civil disturbance management (CDM) duty.
The PNP said a total of seven police personnel were injured during the protests in Manila. Meanwhile, the mobile phone of another cop documenting the protests was allegedly snatched by a rallyist.
The PNP said its personnel were under strict orders to exercise maximum tolerance in line with public assembly protocols.
“Let me be clear: peaceful assembly is a right but violence against law enforcers will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law. Accountability is essential—not only to uphold the rule of law but also to protect both the public and our personnel,” Nartatez said.
Despite the confrontation, the PNP Chief highlighted the conduct of officers on the ground, noting that they remained composed amid provocation.
“I commend our personnel for their discipline and restraint under provocation. Your professionalism reflects the true standard of the Philippine National Police—to serve and protect with integrity and respect for human rights,” he said.
“Maximum tolerance is not weakness. It is a demonstration of strength, control, and commitment to democratic principles. We will continue to support and recognize officers who uphold these values, even in the most challenging situations,” said Nartatez.
