National University stormed into its 11th straight UAAP Finals after scoring a come-from-behind 67-66 win over Ateneo in the Season 88 women’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, Dec. 3.
Down by eight, 57-65, midway of the payoff period, Marga Villanueva, Kristine Cayabyab, Karl Ann Pingol conspired for a 9-1 blitz, before Angel Surada capped it off with her free throw that sealed the match for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Blue Eagles actually had their chance to steal the game, but NU's Aloha Betanio blocked Hannah Lopez's three-point attempt in the dying seconds to the delight of the Bulldogs bench.
Apart from securing its 11th consecutive championship appearance, NU arranged a finals rematch against unblemished University of Santo Tomas this Saturday, Dec. 6.
“Speechless. Sabi ko nga, we were not playing that well during this game, but ang positive thing for this game is our players,” said DA Olan, who guided NU back to the finals in his maiden year as a head coach.
‘Yong kagustuhan manalo, hindi ko na maituturo sa kanila ‘yon, sila mismo, they did not quit hanggang final buzzer,” he added.
Villanueva topcored for the Lady Bulldogs after scoring 16 points with three rebounds, one block, and two steals, while Surada and Cayabyab chipped in 15 points apiece.
Pingol, for her part, collected 10 points, six rebounds, one assist, and five steals to help NU boost its two-peat bid.
“Unang-una, gusto ko pasalamatan yung coaches and teammates sa effort. We dedicate this game to coach DA. Proud ako sa mga ka-teammates ko sa mga effort nila dahil walang bumitaw sa kanila until the final buzzer,” Surada continued..
Kacey Dela Rosa impressed with 18 points, 22 rebounds, six assists, and three steals, while Camille Malagar, who sparked their fourth-quarter surge with Lopez, posted 18 points, six rebounds, one assist, and two steals. All their efforts, however, went down the drain as Ateneo closed out its promising stint.
Meanwhile in the 16U division, Far Eastern University-Diliman struck back at University of Santo Tomas, 82-75, to set up a title duel against unscathed NU-Nazareth School also Saturday.
The Baby Tamaras unleashed a strong opening in the fourth where they built a 68-59 breakaway, enough to outpace the gritty Tiger Cubs.
Dwyne Enriquz starred for FEU-D as he logged 22 points, seven rebounds, and four steals, while Prince Cariño logged a dominant double-double of 21 points and 22 rebounds along with one assist, and two blocks.
Rowie Cabañero flirted with a triple-double off 18 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, two steals, while CJ Tabbuga poured in a double-double output of 14 points and 14 rebounds, with five assists and three steals.
