University of Santo Tomas put up another masterful performance after carving out a 125-50 demolition of University of the East to boost its bid for a semifinal incentive in the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday, Nov. 12.
Kent Pastrana led the Golden Tigresses’ first-half onslaught before breaking the game wide open in the next two frames where they built an insurmountable lead that was too much for the Lady Red Warriors to overcome.
Pastrana dropped a career-high 35 points which went with 12 rebounds, two assists, one block and five steals to steer UST to its 11th straight victory.
UE, on the other side, remained winless in 12 games this season.
“I'm so happy sa performance ko today... Ibibigay ko lahat ng makakaya ko para sa team na manalo every game,” said Pastrana. "As a leader, I'll do my best palagi para makatulong sa teammates and coaches ko."
Oma Onianwa provided support with 12 points, while Coi Danganan, Karylle Sierba and Rachelle Ambos added 11 points each for UST which returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 15, against Ateneo at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Syvil Oñate paced the Lady Warriors with 20 points, while Rachel Lacayanga pumped in 20 points in a losing effort, but UE has its opportunity to end its 22-game drought when it battles defending titlist National University at the Big Dome.
Meanwhile, National University Nazareth School fended off Far Eastern University-Diliman’s late rally, 72-68, to secure the No. 1 seed as well as the semifinal incentive in the 16-under division.
The Bullpups overcame a lethargic start before Mark Arzola took charge to build a 53-38 lead.
NUNS remained unscathed with a pristine 12-0 card, while FEU-D, which was spearheaded by Andrei Chavez and Prince Cariño, now carries an 8-3 tally to tie UST for a share of second spot.
Arzola topscored for the Bullpups with 15 points, while David Sabareza and Nick Pena poured in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Clark Khobuntin impressed with a double-double off 11 points and 17 rebounds for NUNS.
Earlier, CJ Tabbuga caught fire from the distance as UST frustrated reigning champion University of the East, 102-93.
Aside from improving to 8-3, the Tiger Cubs solidified their bid for a twice-to-beat advantage and redeemed themselves over the Junior Red Warriors who beat them in their first encounter, 87-78, last Oct. 4.
UE dropped to fourth with a 7-5 slate, just a game ahead of another semis hopeful Adamson (6-5).
