Manila MS Mavericks skipper Jonas Magpantay headlines SBA Season 2. (Qatar World Cup)
Jonas Magpantay, fresh off his triumph at the Qatar 10-Ball World Cup, leads a strong mix of seasoned and rising Filipino cue artists in the Sharks Billiards Association (SBA) Season 2, which kicks off on Nov. 10 at the Sharks Arena in Tomas Morato, Quezon City.
The 31-year-old Magpantay hopes to carry the momentm as the new captain of Manila MS Mavericks in the already talent-laden field that has two more teams this season.
Magpantay and the Mavericks are out for a redemption bid after falling short to eventual champions Taguig Stallions in the finale last year.
The Stallions are back to defend their Chino Trinidad Championship Trophy from the inaugural season, facing familiar foes in the Negros Occidental Pillars and Quezon City Dragons, and welcoming new challengers in the Makati Titans and Parañaque Kings.
The Kings boast of the league’s first-ever student participant in 19-year-old Dart Bonode of De La Salle University.
Tournament founder Hadley Mariano said the goal is to provide a platform for aspiring players while promoting the sport, particularly among the youth, in a country that has long been a hotbed for the world’s top cue artists.
“Maraming magaling na players sa atin, ‘yong iba hindi lang nabibigyan ng pagkakataon… at least dito they have the opportunity to showcase their skills,” said Mariano during Tuesday’s PSA Forum presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, and the country’s 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus.
“Siguro ang goal right now is ‘yong higitan ‘yong season 2, gusot naming ma-doble ‘yong reach, sana ma-reach namin ‘yong younger audiences,” he added.
The competition will run for five months, with matchups scheduled five days a week, and will continue to follow a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the finals.
A minor rule tweak will also be introduced: in the standard 25-second shot clock, the timer will no longer sound when 10 seconds remain, creating a “buzzer-beater” style finish to each turn.
Meanwhile, the SBA is also planning to collaborate with sports giant Matchroom Pool in the near future.
