Reigning national champion Ruelle Canino shocked sixth seed Woman International Master Bach Ngoc Thuy of Vietnam to seize a share of the lead after two rounds of the 6th ASEAN Individual Chess Championships-Gov. Henry Oaminal Cup at the Misamis Occidental Resort and Aquamarine Park in Ozamiz on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The win kept the 17-year-old Woman FIDE Master and Olympiad veteran from Cagayan de Oro in the lead alongside five others with perfect two-point scores in this nine-round meet that awards an outright WGM title to the eventual champion.
Also unscathed and atop the heap were Russian IM Evgenija Ovod, Mongolian WFM Batpelden Buyankhishig and Vietnamese WGMs Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, Hoang Thi Bao Tram and Nguyen Thi Thanh An.
Ovod slammed the Philippines’ Jemaicah Mendoza, a World Youth bronze winner; Bunyankhishig smashed WIM Nguyen Hong Anh; Nguyen dumped Russian IM Ekaterina Smirnova; Hoang bested Mhage Sebastian; and Nguyen trounced Joyce Rianna Rueda.
In the premier open section, seven Filipinos headed by GM John Paul Gomez stayed half a point off the pace—a three-man lead of Indian IM V S Raahul, Vietnamese GM Tran Tuan Minh and Indonesian FM Fabian Glen Mariano with immaculate scores of two points.
Gomez edged IM Rolando Nolte to barge into the 10-payer chase pack with 1.5 points.
Other Filipinos in that group were IMs Michael Concio, Jr., Kim Steven Yap, Jem Garcia and Pau Beramina and Thyrone James Tabernilla.
They were also joined by Mongolian IM Mykhdalai Amilal, Vietnamese IM Dang Hoang Son and Indian IM Kamotra Soham.
