The 25-year-old Filipino gymnast ace looks to rediscover his winning form when he competes in the 53rd Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia on Sunday, Oct. 19 (Manila time).
Yulo is joining teammates Juancho Miguel Besana, John Ivan Cruz and Justine Ace de Leon in the men’s qualification phase subdivision 6 set at 8:20 p.m. at the Indonesia Arena.
The 4-foot-11 dynamo has set his sights on his pet events floor exercise and vaults as he hopes to bounce back from a medal-less run in the 2023 edition in Antwerp, Belgium.
Yulo last won a gold in the world when he ruled the floor exercise in 2019 and the vault in 2021. He only advanced in the floor exercise final in 2023, settling for a fourth place finish.
He, however, admitted that he won’t be in his best shape in the competition as he is nursing a wrist injury although he is determined to put on a show.
“My goal is to perform beautiful gymnastics, to be really graceful. I want to really show good and graceful gymnastics,” he said.
Yulo will face familiar faces in the likes of Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat and Fil-British Jake Jarman with the former the defending champion in the floor exercise and the latter in the vault.
The Filipino, on the other hand, is coming off a solid outing in the Asian Championships in South Korea where he won a gold in the floor exercise and three bronzes in all-around, vault and parallel bars.
