Progressive groups staged a protest rally outside the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City, on Monday, Sept. 29, condemning alleged police brutality during the September 21 protest dispersal in Manila.
The rally was sparked by the death of a 37-year-old construction worker, who was reportedly hit by a stray bullet while on his way home from work during the clash between police and demonstrators.
The victim was reportedly crossing Recto Avenue to catch up a jeepney bound for Balut, Tondo, when violence erupted.
Eyewitnesses and circulating videos showed armed police in tactical gear chasing protesters, intensifying public outcry and demands for accountability.
Protesters called on the PNP to launch a transparent investigation into the shooting and ensure that those responsible are held to account.
Human rights groups also renewed their appeal to end what they described as the “militarized response” to peaceful assemblies.
