Students and parents could seek police assistance through 911 for bullying-related activities, especially those that would happen outside the school premises, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Monday, June 16.
PNP chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III said policemen manning the police hotlines were already instructed to attend to the concerns raised by bullying victims and their parents as part of the security preparations for school opening for more than 27 million students across the country.
“The first response of our call takers is to coordinate with local police stations which in turn should coordinate with concerned school heads. The police and school authorities will work together to monitor bullying,” said Torre.
Torre made the assurance of police intervention in cases of bullying outside school premises during his inspection in some schools in Quezon City for the Monday opening of classes.
More than 37,000 policemen were deployed while over 5,000 police assistance desks were set up for Monday’s school opening.
And as of Monday morning, Torre said the opening of classes was generally peaceful. He, however, assured that all policemen tapped to secure opening were ordered to be vigilant and responsive.
He said he already instructed police commanders to maximize the concept of fix visibility point prioritization to ensure the safety of students, teachers and even parents.
“Our commanders have been analyzing beforehand where policemen should conduct patrol. With the school opening, the focus are areas near schools,” said Torre.
“What we are trying to prevent are various modus that victimize students, especially outside the schools,” he added.
Torre assured the public that the PNP will exert all efforts to secure students, especially the quick police response in all calls for assistance.
Torre earlier vowed to implement the five-minute police response and he encouraged the parents to do so by dialing 911.
“We assure the parents that your PNP will be watching over your children with the goal of protecting them and ensuring that their learning environment is safe and peaceful,” said Torre.
“To our kababayan, including parents, please don’t look for us in the police stations. Just dial 911 and we will be there in five minutes,” he added.
