The lead solon-prosecutor in the upcoming Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte has punched his return ticket to the 20th Congress.
Securing his second straight term as a congressman was 4Ps Party-list Rep. Marcelino "Nonoy" Libanan, the House of Representatives' minority leader in the 19th Congress.
The party-list garnered nearly 1.5 million votes during the just-concluded mid-term elections.
“This vote of confidence from the Filipino people is a clear affirmation of the work we have done – and a powerful motivation for us to work even harder to improve lives,” Libanan said in a statement Wednesday, May 14.
The 4Ps party-list garnered the fourth-highest number of votes nationwide, trailing only behind Akbayan, Duterte Youth, and Tingog.
The group’s 1.5 million votes marked a significant increase of 650,000 votes from its 2022 tally.
Libanan was one of the 11 congressmen tapped last February to get a conviction against Vice President Duterte, who had been slapped with seven allegations based on her impeachment complaint.
Weeks later, it was revealed that Libanan was given the informal title of lead prosecutor, and thus took on the task of signing documents related to the impeachment.
However, not all 11 solon-prosecutors won their reelection bids.
Incoming House members Leila de Lima of ML Party-list and Chel Diokno of Akbayan Party-list will reportedly replace these prosecutors.
