NBI, PNP probe Jan. 2 Bilibid stabbing incident -- BuCor

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) have been asked to probe the Jan. 2 stabbing incident inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City where one person deprived of liberty (PDL) died and two other prisoners were injured, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Friday, Jan. 3.

In a statement, BuCor Deputy Director Al Perreras said he has sent separate letters to  NBI Director Jaime Santiago and PNP Chief P/Gen. Rommel F. Marvil for the investigation.

In the letters, the Bucor said both the NBI and the PNP were asked to conduct their investigation to establish the facts, promote transparency, and determine accountability in the death of the inmate identified as Ricardo Peralta.

It said that Perreras has also ordered NBP acting superintendent  C/Supt. Roger Boncales  “to submit a comprehensive incident report on the matter and to fully cooperate with the investigations to be conducted by the NBI and PNP.”

The stabbing incident took place at around 7:15 a.m. on Jan. 2 at Gate 1-A, Quadrant 4 of the Maximum Security Camp of the NBP.

Two other PDLs were also injured from the incident and were identified as Reginal Lacuerta and Bert Cupada.

“At least four PDLs  believed to be involved in the incident are presently being investigated,” the BuCor said.

It said "the body of Peralta was claimed last night by his common law, wife, Lalune Gabriel, while Lacuerta and Cupada who sustained stabbed wounds were brought to Ospital ng Muntinlupa.”
