A congresswoman who advocates for overseas Filipino workers' (OFWs) rights has expressed concern over the effects of United States (US) President Donald Trump's plan to deport millions of undocumented migrants, including Filipinos living and working stateside.
OFW Party-list Rep. Marisa Magsino said Trump's policy will surely "instill fear in Filipinos who have gone to the US to find job and support their families".
"While we respect the Trump's administration's policy, we wish that its implementation will recognize the dignity and rights of all individuals and will be based on a legal process," Magsino said in a statement in Filipino on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
The lawmaker then urged the Philippine government to strengthen its cooperation with the US to ensure the rights and welfare of Filipinos there.
There must also be reintegration for Filipinos who may be affected, she added.
She said OFW Party-list is ready to extend assistance and pursue measures that will give support to the Filipino migrants in times of challenges.
"To all our fellows in the US, I want to tell you that you are not alone. We are here to listen, respond and act for your welfare," she said.
