Magnitude 5 quake jolts Davao Occidental — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 5.0-magnitude earthquake that struck offshore of Davao Occidental on Monday evening, Jan. 13.

The quake, which occurred at 7:41 p.m., had its epicenter 42 kilometers northwest of Balut Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

It was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Kiamba, Sarangani.

Meanwhile, it was registered at Intensity III (weak) in General Santos City, Maasim, and Maitum in Sarangani and Tupi in South Cotabato.

The tremor was “slightly felt” (Intensity II) in Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental and “scarcely perceptible” (Intensity I) in Lake Sebu in South Cotabato and Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental.

Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic, which means it was caused by an active fault near the area.

The public is advised to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
