The Philippines is set to participate in the Shell Eco-marathon (SEM) Asia-Pacific and Middle East 2025, with three teams of engineering students competing in this prestigious event. For the first time, the competition will be held in the Middle East with three teams of engineering students competing in this prestigious event, taking place from February 8-12, and will feature teams from across the region showcasing innovative energy-efficient vehicles.

The Shell Eco-marathon is a globally recognized energy-efficiency competition that challenges high school and college students to develop vehicles capable of achieving maximum efficiency. Participants utilize their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills to design and construct ultra-energy-efficient cars, testing their creations under real-world conditions on the track. With its focus on innovation and sustainability, the Shell Eco-marathon continues to inspire the next generation of engineers to address energy challenges and develop smarter mobility solutions for the future.

Representing the Philippines

Three Filipino teams have earned a place in the competition: Team Siklab from Jose Rizal University, UMindanao Wildcats from the University of Mindanao, and XU Mekan-Eco from Xavier University – CDO. These teams have been recognized for their ingenuity and dedication to designing energy-efficient vehicles that push the boundaries of sustainable transportation.

Each of these teams showcases a mix of seasoned competitors and emerging talents, demonstrating the Philippines' growing presence in the STEM field and its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

The Shell Eco-marathon Challenge

The Shell Eco-marathon challenges student teams to design and build ultra-energy-efficient vehicles. Teams compete in two main categories:

●    Prototype: Focused on futuristic, lightweight vehicle designs that prioritize maximum efficiency.
●    Urban Concept: Centered on practical, road-ready energy-efficient vehicles.

Participants can choose from three energy categories: battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and internal combustion engine. The competition offers students a hands-on opportunity to apply engineering principles and explore advancements in sustainable transportation.

Support from Shell Pilipinas

Serge Bernal, Shell Pilipinas Vice President of Corporate Relations, expressed strong support for the competing teams, stating, “We are incredibly proud of our student teams who will represent the country, ready to showcase Filipino ingenuity and innovation on this global platform. They carry the pride of the Philippines.” The event serves as an important opportunity for young Filipino engineers to gain international exposure, engage in industry-leading discussions, and contribute to the global movement toward energy-efficient and sustainable mobility.
