Philippines remains optimistic about positive relations with China

The Philippines is optimistic that its ties with China will continue to improve despite admitting that the relations between both sides are "not always smooth sailing."

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations Ma. Theresa Lazaro made the remark on Thursday, Sept. 26, during the celebration of the People's Republic of China 75th founding anniversary.

Amid sea dispute and the continued aggression that the Philippines is facing from China in the West Philippine Sea, Lazaro noted the sometimes rough relations between the two countries but recognized the efforts and determination made by both sides in handling challenging issues through peaceful means.

Lazaro said that Manila is committed to enrich its comprehensive strategic cooperation with China on the basis of mutual benefit and respect "as two equal sovereign states."

"In this period, the Philippines remains optimistic that we will see improvements, not only in the diplomatic relations with China, but also in our economic relations, and most especially in our centuries-old people to people relations, which have always been the bedrock of our bilateral relations," she said in a pre-recorded speech.

Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte also said in a video message that Manila and Beijing must work together to promote peace and stability in the region "that will benefit our countries and the broader international community."

She cited the "complex challenges" that not one country can fight on its own, such as climate change, terrorism and transnational crimes. So, they present both the Philippines and China "with opportunities for greater collaboration."

"Together, the Philippines, China and our international partners can find common ground and practical solutions that address these issues and create a safer, more secure and more sustainable future for our peoples," she said.

Duterte said that the Philippines is looking forward to further bolstering ties with China across various sectors to ensure that progress is inclusive and benefits.

"Altogether, we can raise the standard of living for our people, creating opportunities that will endure for generations to come," she said.

"This collaboration, based on mutual trust and mutual respect, will enable us to build a future where both our countries can thrive once again," she added.

For Chinese Ambassador in Manila Huang Xilian, history has shown that the relations between the Philippines and China have maintained an upward trend "despite some ups and downs." Harmonious coexistence as well as common development between the two sides are also in line with the interests of the 1.5 billion people of the two countries together, he added.

"History has also shown that as long as our differences are properly managed, the road of China-Philippines cooperation will be even broader," Huang said.

"So let us renew the original commitment of our diplomatic ties. Keep in mind the well being of our two peoples. Always remember the fundamental interest of our two countries and work together to steer clear of disruptions and advance China-Philippines friendship and cooperation for common prosperity and lasting peace," he added.
