Improved weather expected over the Philippines as ‘habagat’ weakens

Most of the country will experience improved weather as the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” has weakened, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, Sept. 22.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Grace Castañeda said the tropical depression (formerly “Igme”), located outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), has continued to move away; thus its influence on the habagat has weakened.

There are no other weather disturbances monitored inside the PAR that could affect the country, she added.

Based on its 24-hour weather forecast, the habagat may still bring scattered light to moderate rains to Ilocos Region, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to the habagat and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA, however, has warned of flash floods or landslides that may occur during severe thunderstorms.
