The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned on Sunday evening, Sept. 2 about the potential for lahar flows from Mayon Volcano, due to heavy rains from Tropical Storm “Enteng” (international name: Yagi).
Phivolcs said the intense rainfall associated with Enteng could trigger lahar flows, or volcanic sediment flows, along various channels on the slopes of Mayon Volcano.
These lahars could result in muddy run-offs or sediment-laden streams, posing significant risks to nearby communities.
Phivolcs identified several areas at heightened lahar risk, including the Miisi, Binaan, Anoling, Quirangay, Maninila, Masarawag, Muladbucad, Nasisi, Mabinit, Matan-ag, Bonga, Buyuan, Basud, and Bulawan Channels in Albay.
The potential lahars could affect communities along the middle and lower slopes of Mayon Volcano, leading to possible inundation, burial, and washout, it added.
Phivolcs urged residents and local government units in high-risk areas to remain vigilant by monitoring weather updates and implementing preemptive measures.
