A social media post claiming that Mayon Volcano has erupted is false, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

“Report and help stop the spread of this click-bait post!” it said.

Phivolcs reiterated that there has been no recent eruption at Mayon Volcano and advised the public against sharing misleading posts, which can cause confusion and panic.

It also recommended verifying news from credible sources before sharing.

In its bulletin on Wednesday, Aug. 14, Phivolcs reported one volcanic earthquake and one rockfall event at Mayon Volcano, with a “faint” crater glow visible through a telescope.

Mayon Volcano has been on Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) since March 5, which means its state of unrest has decreased to low levels and the likelihood of an imminent eruption is minimal.

However, the public is still advised to avoid entering the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone due to ongoing risks from rockfalls, avalanches, and the potential for a sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruption at the summit.
