DepEd has set the enrollment period in all public schools from July 3 to July 26. However, enrollees are still accepted in public schools even after classes have started.

Dennis Legaspi, Media Relations Chief under the Office of Education Secretary Sonny Angara, told the Manila Bulletin that DepEd is expecting the enrollment data to reach between 19 and 20 million learners by July 29.

The enrollment for SY 2023-2024 reached 27,584,240. DepEd has set the target enrollment at 27,722,835 for SY 2024-2025.

Legaspi said the target enrollment is usually achieved by October of every school year. “Historically, the number of enrollees increases even after classes have started,” he added.

As an existing policy of DepEd, public schools can accept late enrollees as long as the students can attend 80 percent of the total class days for the school year.

First day of school visit

To monitor the first day of school opening, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara was scheduled to visit at least five schools. The first school was supposed to be Biñan Central Elementary School in Laguna; however, classes at this school were declared suspended.

Angara is expected to visit Carmona National High School and Elementary School. He is also scheduled to meet with principals, parents, and education stakeholders at the Carmona Community Center.

Later, Angara is scheduled to visit Muntinlupa National High School and Casimiro Ynares Sr. National High School in Taytay, Rizal.

Postponed school openings

While the majority of public schools started their classes, over 800 public schools in five regions have postponed their openings. As of 9:30 p.m. on July 28, DepEd showed that 842 schools will postpone their scheduled start of classes for SY 2024-2025.

Schools that have postponed their opening dates will use the delays for clean-up and rehabilitation activities following the massive flooding caused by Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon (habagat).
