Philippines on monsoon break, ‘habagat’ rains to return by weekend — PAGASA

Despite the official declaration of the onset of the rainy season, warm and humid weather is expected to prevail across most of the country over the next 24 hours due to a “monsoon break,” said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Wednesday morning, June 5.

A monsoon break is characterized by dry periods that last for several days to two weeks.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Obet Badrina said the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” is expected to return by the weekend and bring rains to parts of western, including Metro Manila, and Western Visayas.

Meanwhile, in the next 24 hours, the trough or extension of a low pressure area (LPA) may bring cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms to Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur.

PAGASA warned that flash floods or landslides may occur in these areas due to moderate to heavy rainfall.

Badrina said the LPA has a slim chance of developing into a tropical depression.

He added that cyclone formation is less likely until the weekend.

Moreover, the rest of the country will continue to experience partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, with isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms possible in the afternoon or evening.

PAGASA also warned the public about possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
